Landscape Thread Painting



Try your hand at thread painting to enhance your picture. With these techniques, even a first attempt can look great. This small quilt is a wonderful sampler of several techniques to broaden your skill set while having fun being creative and painting “outside the lines”. Bonus technique: Perfect binding join every time!

Fabric

  • 13” x 14” Green backing fabric
  • Two 2-1/2” x WOF strips of green fabric for binding
  • ¼ yard of Brown border fabric
  • 3-1/2” x 10” sky fabric
  • 2-1/2” x 10” medium green
  • 3” x 6” EITHER dark green for meadow OR blue for lake
  • 6” x 6” light gray (large rock)
  • 6” x 11” strip for gray rocks
  • 8” x 10” floral
  • 5” x 7” light green
  • 10” x 10” mottled or grassy green for trees and shrubs
  • Other scraps to use for these pieces, as desired
  • 14” x 14” lightweight batting or fleece

 

Thread – Decorative threads as used in original project

  • Sulky 30 wt Solid Cotton Thread: 733-1271 Evergreen, 733-1130 Dark Brown
  • Sulky 30 Wt. cotton Blendables: Trees/Shrubs: 733-4020 Moss Medley, 733-4051 Forever Green, 733-4052 Lime Batik. Rocks: 733-4023 Natural Taupe, 733-4028 Storm Clouds. Flowers: choose colors to match floral fabric. Lake: 733-4022: Midnight Sky.
  • Sulky Sliver #8040 Opalescent Metallic Thread (Sky)
  • Polyester invisible thread
  • Lightweight bobbin thread to blend with backing fabric (optional)
  • Coordinating sewing thread - match black or colored fabric

 

Notions

  • 14” x 14” Heavy cutaway stabilizer (e.g. Sulky Cut-Away Plus)
  • 14” x 14” Fusible polymesh cutaway stabilizer (e.g. Sulky Fuse N Stitch)
  • ¼” Steam-A-Seam 2 (optional)
  • Temporary Spray adhesive
  • Iron-On Transfer Pen – Black
  • Free-motion quilting foot
  • ¼” piecing foot
  • Chalk marker
  • #2 lead pencil
  • 10” x 12” Steam-A-Seam 2 Lite (Bring more, if possible, in case it is needed)
  • 90/14 topstitch needle
  • Heat Away Stabilizer (optional)
